Sadly abused cabinet card

This cabinet card has really been abused. The edges are worn round, they have been cut and broken. The photo itself has suffered scratches and wear. While it could be a sign that the owner lacked care for the image, I will turn that round to postulate it a sign of much handling as the owner kept moving this to a nicer place for better viewing.

Although our previous image was the second photograph in the Green Fan Album, this man’s photo seems to me should be paired with the first image of the lady in the giant hat. The mounts are similar, thicker, rougher cardboard. He has quite an impressive mustache as well. I could not find a photographer’s name anywhere.

He seems to be all “nose and mustache” with ears… gives him a sort of Mr. Potato Head look.

I think the aging is really lovely, much better than a pristine object. It’s now one of a kind with its own history. Lovely.

I bet he was a well loved departed husband/father and the wife and children carted that photo around with them in all their moves. They may have carried it in bags and changed frames a few times. He may have looked like Mr Potatoehead but perhaps he was very kind and loving. A pristine card was proably stashed in a drawer somewhere to be ignored. Pristine cards were owned by either meticulous care givers or by someone who had no sentimental attachment to the image.
