Mrs. Everest of New York State

This 20th century photograph is identified as Mrs. Everest of New York State. Her dress is very ruffled, which is one of the fashions of the early 1900s. Her hair style is severe though, scraped back from her face and very small bangs. There’s no photographer information. Interestingly, in the photo album written below the photo opening is written Bella Scarborough wife of William Scarborough Mother was sister of Wm. L. Mearns. While Mrs. Everest’s photo was possibly tucked into a random opening, the note does help us in finding a connection within the Mearns family.

There are numerous empty spaces that once held the following photographs: Bella Scarborough, her mother, grandmother & son Austin; Bella Scarborough’s Mother; Howard & Margurite Scarborough, children of Bella; Austin Scarborough; Emma & ?; James Mearns Brother of William L. Mearns; William Cameron, Husband of Jennie Scarborough; Ruth C. Gifford; Howard & Margurite Scarborough (#2); William Cameron; Jane Cameron; and Howard Scarborough.

As the note says, one of William’s sisters, Mary Ann, married a Scarborough:

Issue of Samuel and Sarah (McCreary) Mearns:
    -Hugh Thompson Mearns, b. Jan. 25, 1819; d. Apr. 30, 1850.
    -Andrew Harlen Mearns, b. Feb. 20, 1821; d. Jan. 25, 1822.
    -John McCreary Mearns, b. Dec. 14, 1823; d. Sept. 2, 1849.
    -Margaret Jane Mearns, b. Jan. 27, 1827; d. Nov. 5, 1895.
    -William L. Mearns, b. Feb. 15, 1829; d. Nov. 1, 1904; m. Amy T. Rittenhouse.
–Issue of Samuel J. and Emma (Fulton) Mearns.
    —- Caroline Mearns, b. Jan. 27, 1867; m. William Andrew Cameron<—–
    -Mary Ann Mearns, b. June 14, 1831 ; d. Apr 23, 1863; m. Howard Scarborough.<—
    -Samuel James Mearns, b. Nov. 27, 1834; d. Jan. 27, 1899; m. Emma Fulton.

Issue of Howard and Mary Ann (Mearns) Scarborough:
    – William Austin Scarborough, b. Dec. 8, 1856; m. Belle S. Watson, of Brooklyn, NY
    – Rebecca Jane Scarborough, b. June 23, 1861; m. William R. Cameron.

I think one of William L.'s aunts, Mary?, married a Hugh Cameron (my notes are at home). So there was a lot intermixing going on, same with the Rittenhouse's.

I don't recall seeing an Everest in my searches though. :) new ground to look over.

The only hint I’ve seen of Everest is Everetts… so I wasn’t able to find anything but this while looking for “living offspring”:

William L. and Amy T. had no children.

Issue of Samuel James and Emma (Fulton) Mearns.
Caroline Mearns (b. 27 Jan 1867) Brick Meeting House, Cecil, Maryland (1880) m. William Andrew Cameron (step-son of Mary Mearns #91) d. May, 13, 1948. She was known exclusively as “Carrie”.

Issue of William Andrew and Caroline (Mearns) Cameron:
Raymond Cameron, b. Nov. 2, 1895. d. 1928 buried: Elkton Cemetery, Elkton, Cecil County, MD. No indication he ever married.
    Margery Lee Cameron, b. Aug. 30, 1906.

The other sisiter, Margaret Annie Mearns (b. 19 MAY 1871) Brick Meeting House, Cecil, Maryland (1880) married Alfred Fassitt:

United States Census, 1920 for Alfred Fassitt
    Residence: , Chester, Pennsylvania
    Household Gender Age
    Alfred Fassitt M 46y (1874)
    Margaret A Fassitt F 48y (1872)
    Margaret C Fassitt F 9y (1910)
    Alfred H Fassitt M 8y (1912)

    SSN death records:
    MARGARET A 19 May 1872, 15 Sep 1966 age 94 (Springfield, Delaware, PA)
    MARGARET C 28 Jun 1910 13 Feb 2003 age 92 (Springfield, Delaware, PA)
No sign of Alfred “Jr.” (yet)

Margaret appears to have married a “Frank Hunnewell”.

You might find this of interest, given the cast of characters just described:

Working from Issue of Howard and Mary Ann (Mearns) Scarborough:
    ———————————————————————————————-
William Austin Scarborough, b. Dec. 8, 1856; m. Belle S. Watson, of Brooklyn, NY.
    They had “two sons”.

The 1880 US census shows Wm. A. Scarborough living in Brick Meeting House, Cecil, Maryland, born about 1858 working as a farm hand at age 22. He is living with William L. and Amy T. Mearns and shown as “Nephew”. No doubt this is William Austin who apparently went by “Austin” and before he married Belle Watson.

I have to guess a little here and propose that the sons were:

    Harry B. Scarborough (b. Nov 1856)
    –Jennie E Scarborough (b. Sep 1880) to Harry B Scarborough (1856-1919 Elkton, MD), Sarah A Scarborough (1861-1922)
    –Emma Scarborough (b. Nov 1888)
    …others (Harry J. (1884-1957), Raymond, Mary)

    and ??? Unknown son….
    –William H(oward?) Scarborough (b. 1886)
This William has a daughter named Marguerite M.

If I can verify this linkage – I have two leads on living offspring…

    ———————————————————————————————-
Rebecca Jane Scarborough, b. June 23, 1861; m. William R. Cameron. “Jane Cameron” must be Rebecca Jane (nee Scarborough) Cameron.

They had at least four children:
    1. Helen Jane b: 27 AUG 1891
    2. John R. b: 5 SEP 1893
    3. William M. b. abt 1897
    4. Paul M. B: abt 1899

Of course, the New York connection might be via the Clugstons.

David B. Clugston was born in New Jersey 1832. He married Margaret Ann McLallen. Margaret was born New York 1838. I found out they lived in Ulysses, Tompkins County, New York – in the finger lakes between Ithaca and Geneva. Rochester and Auburn would be “up lake” Cayuga from there.

Furthermore, David’s sister Lavina, married Henry McLallen. There is a large group of Everests living outside of Ithaca during this time period. Perhaps an in-law?
