Anywhere but here…

Sometimes, you have to do things you just would rather not do. And when you are a kid, that thing could be sitting quietly working at math, apologizing for teasing the child next to you during lunch hour, or standing still for the class portrait. Take a look at these young faces and just imagine where they might rather be.

Unidentified school children circa 1955

I have pulled out a few faces that I think need closer examination for their potential thoughts.

PS here’s a gratuitous shot of my little girl going a bit barmy.

There do seem to be rather a large proportion of distracted children in this class photo. The teacher is doing a very good job of looking calm and serene – where was her mind, i wonder?

I love your idea for this post! OK, Girl #6 front row would rather be at the library checking out a book. Girl #3 from the right front row would rather be practicing some cheers so she can become a cheerleader when she gets to high school.

The little boy, 6th from the right, first row: If I pretend this isn’t happening maybe it will go away…

The only face I can read is the teacher. She definitely looks satisfied and proud of her class.

A fine post. You are bang on describing what these faces are up to.

Definitely a full variety package of kids! I’d bet our Miss Brooks kept her eye (and hand) on the boy on the back row just next to her. He looks like real trouble. And she knew the boy in the stripe shirt (front row right) was going to need a lot of help if he was ever to get out of third grade.

The girl with glasses, she always lets Miss Brooks know who did what in class. .And Dennis the safety patrol captain, he got his start on a future political career by being elected student body president.

Front Row – Girl 3rd from Right – With Marcia, Jan, Bobby, Peter & Greg

Front Row – Boy 4th from Right – Away from the girls.

PS. Your “little girl” is gorgeous.

The boy on the right of the first two you selected is trying to get rid of that fly on his forehead.

Adorable closing photo! Those boys sure do appear to be dreaming for fishing or plotting for sure! Great look into their faces!

It looks like the photographer or teacher yelled at them to stand up straight but didn’t tell them to look at the camera and smile.

Yes – the boy front row 4th from right is desperately trying not to get cooties from the girls he is forced to stand between – or perhaps making sure he is not caught enjoying being forced to stand between two girls.

Not a very cheerful bunch are they; I guess they’d been nagged at threatened for quite a while! I looked in vain for one who actually smiled. Perhaps they’d rather be doing what your daughter was.

Two of the girls have some weird thing going on with their hair,
landing on their forehead in the strangest way.
I can just imagine their mothers thinking they were quite clever
fixing their daughters UP like that…

I love it. I always do this – imagine what is going through the minds of people in old photograph. Lovely.

The little boy in the front row with his shoulders rolled forward is scared of getting “girl” germs:) Your little doll is a real doll:)
