A trip to Disneyland

From August 1962 or thereabouts we have two photos from Disneyland. The park at this time was only 7 years old and look how wide open the pathways are! For anyone who has been to Disneyland in the past 30 years, this is virtually unreal. This is back when you could wear a dress and heeled sandals to Disneyland and not be concerned about having your toes stomped on by the crowd or rolled over by a stroller. The attractions pictured are the Columbia Sailing Ship and the Matterhorn Bobsleds ride.

The people featured in these photos are Eleanor Conradson (my grandmother-in-law) and her boyfriend at the time, and his son. No one can remember her boyfriend’s name, unfortunately. My mother-in-law told me there was some story about his family, but she couldn’t remember the exact details. Either he or a daughter were murdered in some sort of robbery! The people who knew their names are long gone from my life, so I have no way of learning more.

At this point in the game, Disneyland was in the shape that most of us are familiar with, as you can see in the images below I found online. Click the images to open and enlarge.

1962 Map of Disneyland

Early 1962 aerial view of Disneyland

1965 aerial view of Disneyland

You will see the “Rivers of America” in the top left of the drawn map. It clearly was in place by August 1962 for the Columbia to be operating on it at the time of the snapshot above, but interestingly in the early ’62 photo, the Rivers are dry and unfinished.

It is very interesting as a local native who has watched a lot of the county be developed to have evidence of just how open Orange County, CA was when Disneyland opened. Compared with how it is now, this is like another country. All of the open spaces on the aerial photos have been completely developed with homes, businesses, apartments, freeways, and much more. The one big hotel shown – the Disneyland Hotel – is surpassed by massive hotels on every side of the park. It really is a tourist mecca.

Christmas Day!

xmas-cards-for-2016-7

All grown up

Over the course of 13 cards, we have seen Kathy & Karen Klein grow up from babies to teenagers. Kathy has grown her hair long as was popular in 1969, while Karen is keeping hers cut short. Both girls look to the side. This is our last Klein family card. I have no idea who they might have been sent to, maybe Aunt Rita who was the recipient of a different Klein family member’s card? I hated seeing them languishing in a box of other photographs, so I’m happy to have rescued them from obscurity or even the trash.

This last photo card features a pine cone, the sentiment Merry Christmas / and a happy new year! as well as the family’s names – The Kleins / Fred, Isobel, Kathy & Karen.

Merry Christmas to you, wherever you may be! There are yet more cards, because you know the mail does not always cooperate with us, and sometimes we don’t always get our cards into the mail in a timely fashion. There’s always a couple that arrive after Christmas, so stay tuned!

Christmas Eve

xmas-cards-for-2016-27

It’s Christmas Eve around the world! I hope all your Christmas cards have arrived at their destinations to carry the wishes of happiness and love to everyone on your list. Kathy & Karen Klein are opening gifts in a paneled room, surrounded by more gifts. The color printed card is dated 1968 and features a horse drawn sled. It was signed Fred, Isobel, Kathy & Karen, and the signature appears to have been incorporated in the printing.

Merry Christmas Happy New Year

Full color!

The reverse of this card indicates it was 1965. The girls Kathy & Karen are again in matching pajamas, and looking at a large decoration. It appears to have a small elf on it, and reminds me of a mistletoe ball my mother had. The girls are surrounded by pretty packages. The color printed card also features holly and ribbon ties, and is signed The Kleins / Fred, Isobel, Kathy, Karen.

Christmas Greetings

Something important to say here

Wearing the same pajamas as the card from the previous year, Kathy & Karen are again opening presents while surrounded by more presents. They must have been very loved! The card salutation is Christmas Greetings from Our Home to Yours, and features a pair of small houses with smoke coming from their chimneys. The printed closing reads The Kleins – Fred, Isobel, Kathy & Karen.

Peace on Earth

Girls and gifts

Some of these cards are really difficult to guess the year. There will be some help on some future cards, so I’m taking a guess that this is early 60s. Kathy & Karen Klein share the opening of a present, surrounded by more wrapped packages. The card itself features an angel, stars and the salutation Peace on Earth. It is signed simply The Kleins.

Growing up and a different dog

Here’s the last card I have from the Gus and Abby Klein family, showing Augie, Susan and Frankie, and now with Bonnie who looks to be a wirehaired or Aerdale terrier. The photo is in color and slides The back of the card has a nice note.

As usual, this was the “best” of 20 pictures brother John took over Thanksgiving weekend – John & Linda were up with the new baby – she is precious & charming & we all wish they could move up here so we could watch her grow up.

Lots of love,

Abby & Gus
